Wooden Tubs and One-Piece Hot Tubs

!±8± Wooden Tubs and One-Piece Hot Tubs

The wooden hot tubs are by far the most popular variety of hot tubs. The hot tub is actually constructed like a large barrel. It has wooden staves and steel bands. Redwood, cedar and teak are commonly used to make the staves. Most of the older hot tubs are made of redwood.
The wooden tub is quite deep inside, approximately between 36 to about 48 inches in depth. There is an inset within a wooden deck, so that it is easy to enter the hot tub. There is a seating arrangement inside the tub, and this is generally in the form of wooden benches. The bench forms a ring around the inner circumference of the tub.

Nowadays, the one-piece hot tubs are also quite common and have many advantages as well. They are also known as unibody spas. The tub is actually a formation of one piece with shapes and various seating arrangements are provided inside the tub. There are one or more water jets attached to each integral seat. In this way the water is directed to all the parts of the body and provides the massage. Sometimes all the water jets may automatically move or rotate, again providing the effect of a massage.

The exterior of the tub is the spa shell, composed of two units - a surface and an understructure. The surface gives the color and resistance against sun, chemicals and normal wear and tear. There may be special coatings too. The understructure gives the support and strength to hold the large amount of water and the weight of the bathers. In the manufacturing process the surface and the understructure and molded together.

One-piece hot tubs are popular because their manufacturing cost is lower than the wooden hot tubs. They are easier to install and more energy efficient. These hot tubs are sometimes called Jacuzzi or Whirlpool tubs, though these are actually brand names.

The depth of one-piece hot tubs is less than a wooden tub, between 32 and 36 inches. It can fit through doors and narrow hallways. If they need to be placed in a backyard or some other location which does not have enough clearance for carrying the tub, a crane is usually used to place it.

Several water pumps are used in the modern hot tubs, maybe one to about four of them. The circulation pump serves the heating and filtration of the water. The other pumps take care of the hydrotherapy jets. Computer controls are not uncommon in today's world and to add further sophistication to the hot tubs several accessories are also used. These could include special lighting, sound systems, flat panel TV sets and DVD players.

Used Hot Tubs from a Dealer and a Private Owner

!±8± Used Hot Tubs from a Dealer and a Private Owner

There are many customers who can understand the efficiency of a quality product and value its reputation. Most people undergo lifestyle changes and hence adapt changes in their spa needs. People who are heading for retirement may not require the huge wooden hot tub which they had purchased, when the children were at home and the family was larger. On the other hand, there are other families which are growing and may require a larger hot tub.

In this way people have used hot tubs at home and would like to put them up for sale or exchange. Most of the hot tubs are generally in good conditions, or sometimes they could require a few minor repairs. A previously enjoyed hot tub is a great way to get into a new product without the investment.

If you buy a used hot tub from a shop or a dealer, there are several advantages. Generally all pre-owned hot tubs are tested and inspected by a technician. Often checks have also been carried out, where the hot tub is put up on blocks, filled with water and then run for a couple of hours. In this way leaks, heating and jet performance can be tested.

All the equipment belonging to the used tubs is thoroughly tested and the defective parts are replaced by new factory parts. The covers too are inspected to check if they are functional and then replaced. Some hot tubs are even given a fresh coat of paint.

If a dealer goes through these procedures, he sometimes offers a warranty, for the parts, against leaking, heater malfunction and jet malfunction. The manufacturers' warranties cannot be transferred from the first owner to the second.

On a private basis, it is quite difficult to find used hot tubs, because even portable hot tubs are of a semi-permanent nature. But you may be lucky and find someone selling a used hot tub in your neighborhood. Before you commit to a purchase, there are few things that one should check out.
Even a used tub is a big expenditure and you should make a thorough examination of the hot tub by examining the shell for signs of damage. If the side panels can be taken off, you should even look under the shell. Make sure that there are no cracks in the insulation and no signs of damage or leakage.

The pump and filtration equipment should also be checked. Make an experiment by filling the hot tub with water, so that you can see the leaks, if there are any. When it is filled with water, all the equipment should be turned on to make sure that the jets and everything else works. The display and the controls should also be working. In case of any doubt just ask about it, so that you can be confident of your expensive purchase.

Spa And Hot Tub Heat Conservation

!±8± Spa And Hot Tub Heat Conservation

It is a known fact that hot tubs and spas heat water. This is why it is always better to aim to conserve as much of this heat as possible with these tips.

Covering your spa saves energy:

As heat rises, keeping your spa covered helps in retaining the heat that is generated in the spa. This is why most of the modern spas have well-insulated shells. With a cover that is in good condition, ensuring that the tie straps are snugly fit and latched when the spa is not in use helps in reducing leakage of heat.

However with deteriorated spa covers, heat leaks at the hinge-fold and spa shell rim with improper seating of the edges of the cover. If you find your spa cover to be heavy, it means that the foam core insulation is water logged. However as water logged covers have no R-value, it only leads to wastage of heating dollars. Instead, opt for a high quality replacement spa cover that saves energy, lasts longer, is more resistant to water absorption and helps in improving the beauty of the spa.

The benefits of Creating Windbreaks:

Windbreaks have to be created around the spa not only for privacy sakes, but also for reducing wind exposure that can lead to heat loss. Privacy panels, fencing, spa enclosures, coveralls and shrubs also work as effective windbreaks.

Tips for thermostat settings:

Factory spas have a high temperature limit of 104 degrees F. however by reducing the temperature to 102 degrees F; overall energy consumption is reduced considerably as you need more energy to heat additional degrees of your spa water.

What to do when going for a vacation:

When on a vacation, the thermostat has to be reduced. If you will not be around for a week or more during the warmer months, the heater can either be switched off or set at lowest levels. However in freezing weather, heating has to be maintained to prevent damage to pipes and plumbing during to freezing. Heating can be avoided if the spa is winterized, and its water removed from plumbing system.

Tips for off-peak heating:

Check with your power company to see if they offer reduced rates on power utilities during off peak hours, because of lowest demands. If your spa has a timer circuit, you could program your thermostat to heat the spa during off-peak heating. With a well insulated spa and a good cover, it is possible to maintain heat for a few hours, even when heater is switched off.

Blowers, lights and air jets used in spas:

The air induction jets in the spa offers soothing massage when in the spa. However by inducing air into the spa, it lowers the water temperature that has to be replaced with the spa heater. Do switch off air and water lights when the spa is not used.

Though powered air blowers were once popular, they are not favored. In fact, when buying new spas today, it is recommended not to buy one that has an air blower motor. These spas are not only loud; they consume lots of energy and lowers the water temperature rapidly.

Better and more expensive spas have adjustable hydro jets in them that induces warmed air from the equipment cabinet into the water. This is a better option for your spa than a motor driven blower.

About plumbing system and filter cartridge in spas:

The filters in the spa have to be cleaned with every water change and with non-foaming filter cleaning compound every 3 to 4 months. This is because a clogged spa filter reduces the circulation of the spa water, and strains the pump. Clogged filters also makes your heater element perform less efficiently. Filters have to be replaced annually for the peak performance of the spa, cleaner water and savings in energy.

Use a spa system flush for flushing the plumbing system and heater element when changing the water in the spa. This helps maintain uninterrupted water flow the efficient working of your heater element.

The floating thermal blanket reduces loss of heat with insulation and reduction of evaporation. Though a small investment is required for this blanket, it brings with itself Hugh returns with the added advantage of maintaining the build up of moisture in the spa to a minimum. This helps increase the life of the spa cover.

How to conserve water:

Water should not be wasted. So repair leaks if required, and adjust jets to ensure the streams of hot water are not sent to the deck.

Tips To Follow When Shopping for a New Spa:

When buying a new spa to replace an obsolete and energy wasting spa, shop wisely. Never overbuy horsepower as some manufacturers play the jet and horsepower numbers game. Remember that the more jets they offer, the more horsepower that is required for feeding the jets.
More than the number of jets, the design and engineering of the spa is important. With a well designed spa, you don't need numerous jets for a soothing and vigorous hydro massage. Remember that the larger is the pump motor, the more power it consumes for its running. This in turn leads to huge power bills.
